About Us
Guy and Catharine moved to Cornwall in 2000. With Guy’s retirement in 2001, they were able to explore the Cornish countryside on long walks. On one of these, they came across a holy well, and that is where this book really begins. What started as a chance encounter turned into a mission, a challenge to locate, uncover and visit every holy well in Cornwall.
Catharine English
Catharine wanted to read Geology, but after a spell making maps ended up with Theology, so was perfectly fitted for this project. Bringing up two children, interleaved with various jobs, she somehow found time to draw, paint, write poetry and while stranded in the States, quilt; indeed she was seldom without needlework of knitting on hand. In Cornwall, she too worked with Citizens’ Advice, gardened and became a fairly willing sailor. Joining the Arts Society led to a botanical project (plants were her great love) and then a forensic book on a forgotten distinguished local botanist. Really, she should have been an academic but that door did not open.
A selection of her art and poetry can be found on idontdopeople.com
Guy English
Guy read chemistry (and rowing) at Oxford, then joined Kodak to work on improving the manufacture of film and paper at Harrow, eventually in the US. Marriage led to two children, and somehow to sailing. When Kodak withered at the start of the century, friends in Cornwall beckoned, with better sailing in prospect, and it turned out, gig rowing. Life filled up with volunteering for the Prince’s Trust, Citizens’ Advice and sailing clubs, and with discovering our new home. And wells, we found, are a great way of exploring this county.
